We attended the North American launch of the all-new KTM 390 Adventure R– the first-ever R model in the 390 lineup. With that signature “R” badge comes a big question — is it worthy of the title?

At just $6,999, this is one of the most affordable ways into the “R” world of KTM. And you’re not getting a stripped-down compromise — this is a purpose-built, well-rounded adventure machine. Powering the new R model is a revised engine based on the familiar 390 platform — now stroked to nearly 400cc. It still delivers 44 horsepower, but with improved torque, especially useful in technical terrain or when cruising. And while the powerband favors higher RPMs for peak performance, it’s smooth and forgiving at lower revs — great for urban rides and tight singletrack alike.

A six-speed transmission ensures you’re covered whether you’re threading through city traffic or cruising down the highway. The slipper clutch, a carryover from other 390 models, helps smooth aggressive downshifts and keeps the ride drama-free — whether you’re slicing through corners or just commuting.

In terms of suspension, KTM didn’t hold back. Up front is a 43mm WP Apex fork with about 9 inches of travel. It’s fully adjustable with 30 clicks of compression and rebound, all done easily from the top — super trail-friendly. The rear shock offers preload and rebound adjustability and matches the front’s travel, though we might’ve expected more fine-tuning options given the R badge. Still, the ride is exceptionally stable — we tackled mixed terrain, from highways to two-track and singletrack, and the bike was planted every step of the way.

Braking is handled by Bybre, a subsidiary of Brembo. With a 320mm front and 240mm rear rotor setup, there’s plenty of stopping power — no fade, no fuss. And this year, the bike gets a huge upgrade: 21-inch front and 18-inch rear spoked wheels, paired with true off-road tires. No more immediate wheel upgrades needed — the aftermarket is wide open now.

The redesigned fairing, tank, and windshield bring a much-needed rally-inspired aesthetic. And with a 4-gallon tank, riders can expect up to 200 miles of range, according to KTM’s Quinn Cody. We rode 120 miles in a single loop — including a few “enthusiastic” stretches into triple-digit speeds — and the bike never missed a beat.

Technology is another strong suit. The 390 Adventure R includes lean-sensitive traction control, cornering ABS, and three ride modes — Street, Off-Road, and Rain — that adapt braking and power delivery on the fly. The 5-inch TFT display is crisp and simple, with a four-button interface that makes switching settings effortless.

Seat height lands at about 35 inches, which keeps things approachable compared to KTM’s taller ADV machines. Ergonomics — seat, bars, pegs, and windscreen — are dialed for comfort and control.

So, does it earn that “R” badge? Definitely. It’s not a powerhouse, but it doesn’t need to be. What it offers is a dependable, balanced, and adventure-ready platform that punches well above its weight — whether you’re just getting into ADV riding or looking for a lighter, more agile companion to your big bike.
